One in four American children grows up without a father in the home. That is 17.8 million children in this country alone. The data on what happens to them is not in dispute. Boys raised without a present father are twice as likely to drop out of high school, twice as likely to be incarcerated, and 1.8 times more likely to become teen fathers themselves. Without intervention, the cycle simply repeats. One generation hands the wound to the next.
Bethesda Ranch is the intervention.
We are building a day-program boys ranch in Parker County, Texas, for 250 to 300 local boys. They arrive in the morning at eleven to fourteen years old, while there is still time to shape them, and stay through age eighteen or college, whichever comes last. Twelve hours a day. Year round. Free to every family. Priority for the boys headed for trouble, the ones the state cannot reach, the ones a system that forbids correction has given up on.
What they receive is what every boy needs and almost none of them can find. A daily man in the ordinary hours. Real work on real land. Food they helped grow. Classical academics paired with a formation curriculum that asks the five questions a man has to settle: how to think about God, work, women, money, and life.
By the time a boy who enters at eleven graduates, he has spent twenty thousand hours in the room with men who did not leave. More than most fathered boys ever receive.
We are not building this to manage the problem. We are building it to end it. We are raising the next generation of men who do not leave.
The boys we are building this for are not theoretical. They are sleeping in motel rooms tonight. They are the ones whose mothers stood at counters and said "that's not my son." They are waiting for someone to build the room.
